- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means getting cited in the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews
- It doesn't replace SEO: AI engines rely on pages that are already indexed, and Google says no special optimization is needed for its AI features
- What changes is the click: with an AI summary on the page, people click on results about half as often (Pew Research, 2025)
- Measurement comes first: Search Console doesn't separate AI traffic, Bing Webmaster Tools counts citations, ChatGPT tags its links with utm_source=chatgpt.com

In late 2024, we asked on this blog whether generative AI would knock SEO off its spot as the number one traffic source. Two years on, the question looks different. Google shows AI answers above its results, and ChatGPT has become a search engine in its own right.

In this article, we look at what GEO means today, what it actually changes for your website traffic, what it doesn't change, and how to measure your visibility in AI answers.

*Originally published in 2024, fully updated on October 6, 2026.*

## What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO covers the work of getting a brand, a page or a piece of information into the answers of generative engines. You'll also hear AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or LLMO. The labels differ, the goal doesn't: being cited, and ideally linked, when an AI answers a question about your market.

The term comes from a research paper, [*GEO: Generative Engine Optimization*](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735), published in November 2023 by researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi and presented at KDD 2024. The authors show that some content changes can boost a source's visibility in generated answers by up to 40%.

Back in 2024, our article still mentioned Bard and Bing Chat. Both have been renamed since, and the field has grown:

EngineWhat it is in October 2026**Google AI Overviews**an AI-generated summary at the top of Google results. Over 2.5 billion monthly users according to Google ([I/O 2026](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/sundar-pichai-io-2026/))**Google AI Mode**a conversational search tab for longer or comparative questions. Over 1 billion monthly users a year after launch (same source)**ChatGPT search**web search built into ChatGPT since [October 31, 2024](https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-search/), open to everyone without an account since February 2025. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026 ([OpenAI](https://openai.com/index/scaling-ai-for-everyone/))**Gemini**Google's assistant, which [replaced Bard](https://blog.google/intl/en-africa/products/explore-get-answers/bard-becomes-gemini-try-ultra-10-and-a-new-mobile-app-today/) on February 8, 2024**Microsoft Copilot**the successor to Bing Chat, [renamed on November 15, 2023](https://blogs.bing.com/search/november-2023/our-vision-to-bring-microsoft-copilot-to-everyone-and-more), plus Copilot Search in Bing**Perplexity**an answer engine that cites its sources as [numbered references](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work) in every answer

AI Overviews have been live for everyone in the US since [May 2024](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/), and keep reaching new markets: France only got AI Overviews and AI Mode on [July 22, 2026](https://blog.google/intl/fr-fr/nouveautes-produits/explorez-obtenez-des-reponses/recherche-ia-apercus-mode/). So GEO isn't just a ChatGPT topic anymore. A large part of it happens on Google.

## How a generative engine picks its sources

A generative engine that searches the web doesn't "know" everything. To answer a question about recent events or a comparison, it runs searches, reads pages, then writes a summary and cites some of them.

Google calls this *query fan-out*: AI Mode [breaks a question down into subtopics and runs many searches at once](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). One user question becomes many queries, and the pages that get cited are the ones that best answer each of them.

Two practical consequences:

- To be cited, you first have to be found. A page missing from Google's or Bing's index, or blocked to AI crawlers, can't be used. For ChatGPT, OpenAI asks site owners [not to block its OAI-SearchBot crawler](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq) if they want to appear in ChatGPT search.
- Engines quote passages, not whole pages. A page that clearly answers a specific question, with a dated, sourced fact, is more likely to be picked up than a long piece of general prose.

## GEO vs SEO: what changes and what doesn't

Google is explicit. Its documentation for site owners says that ["there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary"](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). SEO fundamentals (helpful content, indexable pages, sound structure) remain the foundation.

The differences are elsewhere:

SEOGEOWhat you aim fora position in a list of linksa citation, or a brand mention, inside a written answerWhat the user seesyour title and meta descriptionwhat the AI kept from your page, rewordedThe querya few keywordsa long question, often followed by more. Google says an AI Mode search is on average [three times longer](https://blog.google/intl/fr-fr/nouveautes-produits/explorez-obtenez-des-reponses/recherche-ia-apercus-mode/) than a traditional oneThe sources that mattermostly your websiteyour website, plus what others say about you: comparisons, directories, reviews, pressMeasurementSearch Console, rankings, clickscitations and mentions, still poorly measured

That last row is the one most teams underestimate. When a generative engine has to recommend an agency, a software tool or a vendor, it leans heavily on rankings and comparisons published by others. Working on your AI visibility also means working on your presence on those pages.

## How does GEO affect website traffic?

That's the real question behind "will GEO replace SEO?", and it can be measured.

In 2025, the Pew Research Center analyzed the browsing of 900 US adults over one month. When a Google results page showed an AI summary, users clicked a link in [8% of visits, versus 15% without one](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/). They clicked a source cited inside the summary in just 1% of visits. The study covers the US in March 2025, but it gives the order of magnitude: the AI answer absorbs part of the clicks.

For a business website, this shows up in two ways:

- General information content (definitions, tool comparisons, product news) loses traffic, because the answer is enough for the user.
- Offer pages can hold their rankings and still lose clicks, because the recommendation now happens inside the AI answer. Being cited there becomes the way to be present when the choice is made.

## How to measure your visibility in AI answers

The tools are new, and none of them gives the full picture on its own.

- Google Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Performance report, under the "Web" search type, [without separating it](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). You can't isolate it.
- Bing Webmaster Tools has offered an [AI Performance report since February 10, 2026](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/February-2026/Introducing-AI-Performance-in-Bing-Webmaster-Tools-Public-Preview) (public preview). It counts how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI answers, URL by URL.
- ChatGPT automatically adds `utm_source=chatgpt.com` to the links it sends ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq)). In Google Analytics, filter your sessions on that source.
- Webflow AEO, available to Enterprise sites since [May 21, 2026](https://webflow.com/updates/now-available-webflow-aeo), measures how your brand shows up in AI answers and how AI bots crawl your site. We covered it in our article on [Webflow AEO](/blog/webflow-aeo-answer-engine-optimization-built-directly-into-webflow).
- Then there's prompt tracking: a list of questions your customers actually ask, run every day across several engines, with the citation rate of your brand and your competitors.

That last method is the one we use for Digidop. Based on our internal tracking, across 18 prompts tracked in France between September 5 and October 4, 2026, Digidop was the most-cited Webflow agency in AI answers, with a 31.4% citation rate. On the three "best Webflow agency" prompts, Digidop appeared in about 98% of answers. A citation rate means nothing without the prompt list and the period, which is why we give both.

## What to do in 2026

Our 2024 recommendations still hold. They've just become more specific.

- Keep a hybrid strategy. SEO is still the way in: a page that isn't indexed won't be cited anywhere. GEO sits on top of it and replaces nothing.
- Write content that answers real questions. One question per section, a clear answer in the first lines, facts that are dated and linked to their source. That's what makes a passage quotable.
- Open your site to AI crawlers. Check your robots.txt (OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot, Bingbot) and make sure your key content is readable without JavaScript.
- Look after what others say about you. Reviews, directories, comparisons, press, talks: AI engines cross-check sources. Different numbers for the same fact across your own pages lead to inconsistent AI answers.
- Don't rely on a single channel. Newsletter, LinkedIn, events, partners: the more your brand exists outside Google, the less a drop in clicks puts you at risk.
- Measure before you optimize. Pick about fifteen prompts that matter to your business and track them every month.

The step-by-step method is in our guide [How to make your website visible in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI answers](/blog/make-your-website-visible-in-chatgpt-perplexity-and-ai-answers).

## Our take

GEO won't replace SEO, because it depends on it: generative engines read pages that search engines have already found. But it does replace part of what SEO used to deliver, which is the click.

General information content is the most exposed: the AI answer is often enough for the user. Vendor recommendations, on the other hand, are increasingly made inside AI answers, and there, being cited or not makes all the difference.

Our advice: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode the questions a prospect would ask to find a solution like yours. If you don't show up in the answers, start there. For SEO and GEO, we work with our partner agency [Vydera](https://vydera.com/en/agentic-geo-agency), an AI-native visibility agency.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is GEO in SEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of practices aimed at getting a brand or a page cited in the answers of generative engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. It extends SEO rather than competing with it.

### Will GEO replace traditional SEO?

No. Generative engines rely on indexed pages, and Google states that no special optimization is needed for its AI features beyond SEO best practices. What changes is the share of searches that end without a click.

### How do I show up in ChatGPT answers?

Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, publish pages that clearly answer specific questions with sourced facts, and work on your presence on the sites that compare or recommend players in your market. Our [step-by-step guide](/blog/make-your-website-visible-in-chatgpt-perplexity-and-ai-answers) covers each stage.

### What role does generative AI play in search engine optimization?

It changes where visibility happens. Rankings still decide which pages AI engines read, but the user increasingly gets the answer without clicking: according to Pew Research, Google users click a link in 8% of visits when an AI summary appears, versus 15% without one (US, March 2025).

### How can I tell if my website gets traffic from AI engines?

In Google Analytics, filter sessions whose source is `chatgpt.com`, and check the referral sites of other assistants (Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini). In Bing Webmaster Tools, the AI Performance report counts your citations. Search Console, however, doesn't separate AI Overviews traffic from the rest.

### GEO, AEO, LLMO: what's the difference?

In practice, none. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) stresses answer engines, GEO generative engines, LLMO large language models. All three describe the same work: getting cited in AI answers.
